Autonomy vs Love in Brontes Jane Eyre Essay - 983 Words

From songs, to television, to books, and even to newspapers, the need for love is universal. Love is an emotional necessity that even Jane, from Charlotte Bronte’s book Jane Eyre, cannot ignore. Throughout the story line, Jane is constantly searching to find love. She was looking, not just for the love of a man, but for the love of a family. However, Jane’s search for love sometimes ends up challenging her autonomy. While Jane is longing for love, she is not willing to give up her independence for it. Yet as Jane becomes older and her independence grows, she realizes that, while one needs to be independent, she also needs love in her life. In the early years of Jane’s life, she was a very autonomous girl. She teaches a young French girl named Adele, to whom she grows a fondness for. As a lover, Jane was a neophyte, but she soon found the love that she had always craved for. The Volkswagen Company already had introduced the car net in their cars. The car net technology allows the users to connect their cars with their smartphone and also access many features of the car from their smartphone like locking and setting destinations. This technology of the cars were introduced in the year 2013. Now the Alexa AI is being incorporated with the car net technology. This would be allowing the customers to be able to access more feature into the sys tem that is already existing. They would be able to access their amazon accounts from within the car and also purchase products for the car from the amazon website. But for using these technologies the users would have to provide their personal information to the system. Hence this gives rise to the ethical issues. This would be hampering the privacy for the users and this this effects the ethical side of the technology. The main ethical issues that have come up from the situation Management is the issue of the privacy of the users. The data that is provided by the user is available to company. Hence, these situation violates the classical ethical theories. The theory of Utilitarianism is concerned with the maximum utilization of the resource by the maximum people. The Alexa AI that is incorporated in the cars would be obtaining very private data of all their users and this would be affecting most of their users and hence, this would be violating the Utilitarian theory of the classical ethical theories. In addition to this, the deontology theory was also violated by the company. The deontology theory deals with the duty towards all human beings (Chiu et al., 2014). The technology that is released by the company would not be able to provide the users the privacy for their data and hence, the deontological theory of the classical ethical theories are violated here. In addition to this there is the virt ue ethics in the classical ethical theory (Paquette et al., 2015). It is believed according to the virtue ethics that if a person is morally correct he would not be conducting any kind of unethical behavior in his professional life or at the workplace. The AI that would be implemented in the cars is only a machine and would not be having any kind of practical morals incorporate in them and hence the virtue ethics would be violated (Hursthouse, 2013). In addition to this, there is the Contact theory and it deals with the justification of the events that occur. The situation that is being discussed don to provide any justice as the company acquires the user data almost forcefuly an d hence the contact theory is violated in this case (Magelssen et al., 2016). Abstract This paper will explain the insight of one of the most popular scenes from the highly acclaimed film, Forrest Gump. The scene was titled, â€Å"Run, Forrest, Run! † and the famous quote, â€Å"Run, Forrest, Run! † also came from this scene. The plot of the scene is that Forrest Jenny just met and were quickly became friends. Around this time, Forrest had just begun schooling and he has a pair of corrective braces on his legs. Toward the end of the scene, he and Jenny were getting chased by some of their peers. It was at this point when Jenny said the famous words, â€Å"Run, Forrest, Run! † Forrest started to run and his braces fell off too. All of the elements of this scene fell in just perfectly to add on to the movie’s initial mood. Run, Forrest, Run! This mise-en-scene has many factors into one. For example, the actors who were playing in this particular scene fit right in with the plot, because it was during Forrest’s youth. They did an excellent job in playing their roles to their full potential. In doing so, they were nominated for numerous awards. The director of the film was Robert Zemeckis. He is known for directing movies with a keen sense of using special effects to make scenes more dramatic and narrative (Biographicon, 1994). In Forrest Gump, he done a marvelous job with placing Forrest in historical moments from the 30-year-span this movie was based on (Biographicon, 1994). He won Best Director in 1995 for Forrest Gump. The production designer of the film was Rick Carter. His experience in production designing earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Art Direction for this movie. The art director was Leslie McDonald. Lighting In this particular scene, it was based outside after-school around the middle of the day. The sun was out which made the scene seem like it was a gorgeous day out in the countryside of Alabama. The mood of this scene was refreshing at first, but as it continued it slowly changed to a mood of victory (and somewhat humorous) because of Forrest finally started to run and his leg braces came off (IMDB, 1994). The filmmaker was trying to point out that you can overcome any obstacle, like in this instance, Forrest’s leg was deformed at birth, but all of a sudden, he could have run freely. Setting The setting of this scene was in 1950s-1960s in Alabama. More specifically, this scene is set in a country setting. The beginning of the film took place in the countryside. Forrest and Jenny were born and raised in the country, so the viewer could understand the plot more clearly (Ebert, 1994). This particular scene did reflect to the film’s overall mood, because it gave you a quick look on how important Jenny was to Forrest’s slow, but promising mental development. He had an IQ of 75, so he was labeled as â€Å"mentally retarded,† but Jenny was there to help him when everybody else looked him down (Ebert, 1994). It wasn’t until Forrest went off to college that the setting made a substantial change. Costuming Costuming can tell you plenty of information about characters. It can tell you a character’s mood, the time period the movie (or particular scene) was set in, and the fashion sense of the character, among other things (Zemeckis, 1994). A good example of costuming giving the viewer good insight was when Forrest was about to be sent off to Vietnam for the war and he was in Washington, D. C. During this time, it was the late 1960s and the hippie movement was in full effect (Zemeckis, 1994). This movement was all about free spirit and the people who were for the movement was against the Vietnam War. Jenny, the other main character in this movie, decided to go with the times, with the colorful attire and wearing the peace symbol. On the other hand, Forrest remained the same. As the movie went to and the time changed, the costuming changed as well, which made costuming very important. Hairstyle and Makeup Hairstyle and makeup went right along with costuming to help tell the film’s story. The hairstyle and makeup involvement became more apparent during the midpoint of the movie. A good example of how hairstyle played an important role was when Forrest decided to run cross-country. Before he began, he had his signature clean-cut haircut, but by the time, he finished, his hair had grown to his shoulders and he had a full-face beard (IMDB, 1994). In other words, hairstyle and makeup can reveal the mental and physical state of a character. Opinion For this scene, I felt that it went right along with the movie’s initial mood. There were no outside plots in this scene. All of the elements worked together just fine. In conclusion, Forrest Gump is a very intersting movie that really makes you view the world around you and consider how you should treat people.
